AWARDED FILMS INTERNATIONAL AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL OF ARGENTINA 

La sección competitiva estuvo formada por 10 cortos y 6 largometrajes de distintos países. Un jurado internacional eligió las siguientes películas.

The competitive section consisted of 10 short films and 6 feature films from different countries. An international jury chose the following films.

Directora Ramata-Toulaye Sy, Senegal, 2021, 24min.

El cortometraje revela con particular expresividad actoral y sensibilidad los cambios que se producen en la vida de una adolescente y la relación con su padre, además de echar luz sobre la situación de niñas y mujeres en un contexto patriarcal. Emotivo y vibrante.

The short film reveals with particular acting expressiveness and sensitivity the changes that occur in the life of a teenager and her relationship with her father, as well as illuminating the situation of girls and women in a patriarchal context. Emotional and vibrant.

AYA’S DREAM

El corto, a través de la ficción, nos traslada de forma sutil -una conjunción de sueño y realidad- a la búsqueda de la ancestralidad y el ubuntu. Se trata de un relato audiovisual muy bien logrado que también aborda los problemas ambientales de hoy en día en conflicto con el respeto por la naturaleza de pueblos ancestrales.

The short film, through fiction, takes us in a subtle way – a conjunction of dream and reality – to the search for ancestry and ubuntu. It is a very successful audiovisual story that also addresses today’s environmental problems in conflict with the respect for nature of ancestral peoples.

SOLO SON PECES    

Directoras: Ana Serna y Paula Iglesias, Sahara Occidental, 2017, 17 min.

Desde un abordaje absolutamente original y real (la piscicultura en medio del desierto), el documental visibiliza el conflicto silenciado que vive el Sáhara Occidental como última colonia de África, al tiempo que refleja la importancia de las mujeres en la lucha por la libertad del pueblo saharaui.

From an absolutely original and real approach (fish farming in the heart of the desert), the documentary makes visible the hidden conflict in Western Sahara as the last colony in Africa, while reflecting the importance of women in the struggle for the freedom of the Sahrawi people.

LILA

Directora Ana Bárbara Iglesias, Mozambique, 2022, 20 min.

Con un lenguaje sencillo y cálido, el cortometraje refleja el esfuerzo de Lila por capacitarse y el apoyo de su madre. Es un rico retrato que arroja luz al mismo tiempo sobre los desafíos de vivir en la pobreza y la belleza de las relaciones humanas y la sencillez de la vida. Sororidad y alegría se muestran en el marco de un paisaje que brinda cohesión al mensaje.

With simple and warm language, the short film reflects Lila’s efforts to empower herself and her mother’s guidance. It is a rich portrait that illuminates both the challenges of living in poverty and the beauty of human relationships and the simplicity of life. Sorority and joy are shown in a landscape setting that gives cohesion to the message.

FROM HERE TO THERE

Una pieza experimental deliciosa desde lo audiovisual y desde lo literario. Cuatro minutos que sintetizan la vida y la muerte, no solamente en el nivel local (un pueblo que atravesó un genocidio hace casi 30 años) sino a escala universal.

A delightful experimental piece, both audiovisual and literary. Four minutes that synthesise life and death, not only on a local level (a village that went through a genocide almost 30 years ago) but on a universal scale.

SEEKING ALINE

Directora Rokhaya Balde, Senegal, 2020, 26min.

La obra logra la visibilización de un pueblo desconocido para Occidente. Con imágenes por momentos impactantes, muestra las raíces ancestrales y reivindica el rol de una lideresa que, a la vez, tuvo la valentía de luchar por los recursos naturales de su territorio. Un rescate histórico que combina adecuadamente lo experimental con la realidad.

The film makes visible a community that is unknown to the Occident. With images that are at times shocking, it shows the ancestral roots and vindicates the role of a female leader who, at the same time, had the courage to fight for the natural resources of her territory. A historical rescue that appropriately combines the experimental with reality.

LEV LA TÈT DANN FENWAR / En las brumas de la noche

Directora Erika Etangsalé, 2021, 51min., La Réunion #Migrantes

El jurado considera de manera unánime LEV LA TÈT DANN FENWAR de Erika Etangsalé como el mejor largometraje de las películas evaluadas. Por la narración en primera persona de la directora que nos acerca de una manera intimista a lo ocurrido en la isla francesa de La Reunión, al este de África y sus migrantes de los que poco se sabe en el mundo. Conjugando la puesta en escena, dirección de sonido, dirección de fotografía, material de archivo de noticieros y familiar de manera poética e íntima. La película construye un hermoso e íntimo relato sobre la migración y la identidad a través de las cautivantes imágenes de la isla, así como la narración de su protagonista, una realizadora que busca comprender la historia de su padre y, por lo tanto, el relato de sus propias raíces.

The jury unanimously considered this film by Erika Etangsalé to be the best feature film of the films in competition. For the director’s first-person narration, which brings us closer, in an intimate way, to what happened on the French island of La Réunion, in East Africa, and its migrants, about whom the world knows very little. Combining mise-en-scène, sound design, cinematography, newsreel footage and family footage in a poetic and intimate way. The film constructs a beautiful and intimate story about migration and identity through the captivating images of the island, as well as the narration of its protagonist, a filmmaker who seeks to understand her father’s story and thus the story of her own roots.

MENCIÓN HONORÍFICA / HONOURABLE MENTION

ZINDER

Directora Aicha Macky, 2021, 84 min., Niger

El jurado otorga una mención honorifica a esta cinta por el acercamiento que logra con cada uno de sus personajes, develando al espectador capas de la cotidianidad en Kara -Kara, Niger, denunciando la discriminación y marginación sistemática de la que son víctima sus habitantes.

The jury awarded an honourable mention to this film for the approach it achieves with each of its characters, revealing to the viewer layers of everyday life in Kara-Kara, Niger, denouncing the systematic discrimination and marginalisation of its inhabitants.

Es una ficción con gran ritmo que nos muestra una cultura lejana a la nuestra, haciendo foco en la relación entre los hombres y las mujeres. Una fotografía precisa de los paisajes y los rostros de los personajes como si los tuviéramos cerca nuestro y un relato muy contundente.

A fiction with a great rhythm that shows us a culture far away from our own, focusing on the relationship between men and women. Precise photography of the landscapes and the faces of the characters as if they were close to us, and a very powerful story.
